New in-demand certificate program includes CNA, EKG and Phlebotomy
The Technical College of the Lowcountry has launched a new health sciences certificate program in response to the demand for patient care technicians in the community and region.
The new 21-credit-hour, two-semester program will be offered at the Beaufort Mather, Colleton and Hampton campuses beginning in January.
Patient Care Technicians, or PCTs, work closely with nurses and other medical professionals to deliver quality patient care.
According to Program Director Paige Thompson, the PCT program will also include phlebotomy, Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and EKG technician classes.
“This allows graduates of the program to come away with not only a certificate in Patient Care Technology, but also the ability to sit for such exams as the state (of South Carolina) Nurse Aide Certification, Certified EKG Technician, Certified Phlebotomy Technician and Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant,” she said.
PCTs are in demand and, in fact, the field is projected to grow faster than the average for other occupations – 9% by 2028 – according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
